How to Get Rid of Water Mold in Your Pool

How to Get Rid of Water Mold in Your Pool

Does your pool have white tissue paper-like residue floating on the surface? Is it accompanied by pink slime around the pool’s waterline? It sounds like you have a mold problem in your pool. Fortunately, this is a fixable issue, and you can also prevent pool molding in the future.

White Water Mold & Pink Slime?

White water mold is a type of fungus. Although there is a low chance of getting sick from water mold, it isn’t something you want to have in your pool.

You’ve probably seen pink slime in bathrooms. The formal name for the slime is serraita marcescens. It’s an airborne bacteria that feeds on minerals and fatty deposits in soap and shampoos. It can be hazardous as it causes illness. If recognized, it is vital to rid your pool of this bacteria.

How To Clean

White water mold or pink smile can occur in your pool when the water isn’t correctly balanced, or your pool is simply not clean. Cleaning your pool should be a consistent task to prevent these molds and bacteria from growing and spreading. Here are a few tips on how to clean your pool from bacteria:

Clean The Filter

If there is white water mold in your pool, it is most likely in your filter too. Thoroughly clean your pool’s filter to be reused later; the cleanliness of your pool won't be as effective with a mold-infested filter.

Balance The Water

It is essential to balance the PH of the water in your pool. A PH of 7.4-7.6 is ideal for the pool water.

Chlorine Shock Pool

A regular dosage of chlorine will not be effective in this type of situation. Add 3-4 pounds of calcium hypochlorite per 10,0000 gallons to shock your pool from the bacteria correctly.

If you find mold in your pool, it could be helpful to hire professional help. At SERVPRO, our trained technicians can clean your pool from mold and bacteria.

My fridge is leaking!

My fridge is leaking!

One day you come in and there’s a puddle in front of the fridge. You clean it thinking the kids dropped some ice or something, then tomorrow there’s a new puddle. At this point you’re frustrated. Then the third day you know it’s not the kids, it’s the fridge. Right now with gas prices and everything else high you decide to just clean it up as you find it. The real issue is the damage that water is causing to your flooring, especially as it sits.

According to Forbes

According to Forbes, home improvement section Fridge leaks come from leaky water supply lines and/or inlet valves. They also suggest that you should check your water supply line if you notice poor ice making or a poor flow with your water dispenser.

If that water issue remains you might have to take that flooring up, clean and dry it, and replace that flooring which could be a lot more expensive than getting your fridge repaired.

The kids are on summer break, my toilet is overflowing…HELP!

Let’s be honest, we love the kids but do the kids love us? When we get home after a long day of work, and one of the toilets is clogged up for the thousandth time it seems like they can’t possibly love us. Maybe we need to sign them up for summer camp instead of letting their older siblings watch them. Either way, our toilets are overflowing and we need help!

According to Google

According to Google, the most common cause of toilets overflowing is a clogged toilet bowl. That means that thick toilet paper that helps our tushies isn’t helping our pockets. What if it isn’t the thick toilet paper… Maybe it’s those “flushable wipes”, that really shouldn't be flushed. Either way when your toilet overflows water (dirty/contaminated water) hits your bathroom floor and can possibly still be under that tile or flooring if it isn’t properly cleaned up.

How To Save Your Water-Damaged Wood Floor?

2/13/2022 (Permalink)

wood floors with visible water on them wood floors with visible water on them with the SERVPRO logo over top the photo

Wood flooring is many things – trendy, durable, and beautiful – but unfortunately, it’s not resistant to water damage.  A water hazard can strike your home anytime. Hence, it is in your best interest to learn how to save your water-damaged wood floor.  Wondering how you can do just that? By understanding and implementing the following tips:

Property Inspection And Damage Assessment

Your first task is to survey the property to find the water source and stop it before beginning with the restoration process.

You should also conduct an assessment to determine the extent of the damage and whether the flooring is salvageable or needs replacement.

If you have laminate flooring, which is more susceptible to water damage than hardwood, you will most likely have to replace the damaged flooring.

Remove Surface Water

The next step is to remove the surface water. While you can use mops or old rags, a shop vacuum would probably be most effective in getting all the water out.

In addition, remove any wet rugs, carpets, etc., from the area to prevent further damage.

Clean The Floor

Mild detergent with a compatible disinfectant mixed in clean water is the best combination to scrub your floors clean – without making a dent in your pocket.

However, do not pour the mixture on the floor as that will only worsen the problem. Instead, begin with a few drops and use a stiff brush to scrub the surface thoroughly.

Treat The Moldy Areas

If the flooring shows any signs of mold growth, treat it with TSP (trisodium phosphate) or TSP substitute mixed with water. Keep scrubbing until the mold and discoloration are cleared.

If the mold affected area is too large, it would be best to call in professionals to help with the problem. ? Dry The Floor

When drying the floor, be sure to do it slowly and naturally, as drying it too quickly may weaken it and cause it to crack. Directly applying heat is also highly discouraged!

Instead, fans, heaters, and natural airflow through open windows and doors might be a better alternative. ? Sand The Floor

It is possible that after drying the floor, you may notice cupping. This is when some floorboards are either bent upwards or downwards.

Sanding with a drum or an orbital sander can help restore minor cupping, but in case of extensive damage, you’ll have to face-nail the floorboards back down.

Get Professional Help To Save Your Wooden Floors

While we have listed the essential steps to save water-damaged floors at home, the process can get a little out of hand sometimes.

Therefore, we encourage getting experienced professionals on board to deal with extensive wood damage. Reach out to the experts at SERVPRO to manage the wood restoration process like a, well, pro.

How To Prevent Flooding In Your Basement?

2/13/2022 (Permalink)

A basement is a homeowner’s haven. After all, it is usually where the gym, theatre, and game room are. Or, if nothing else, it is probably a storage area for all the memorable items you so cherish. This is exactly why the thought of your basement flooding can leave you in a flurry of panic. Whether the water flows in through the walls, breaks through the floor’s foundation, or is a result of a mighty storm, you need to act – fast. Here’s how you can prevent flooding in your basement:

? Unclog The Gutters

The purpose of the gutters is to accumulate water and prevent it from entering your home.

However, if they’re already full of leaves, branches, debris, or other solids, they can’t perform their function well. Or at all.

Unclog the gutters, and the water will accumulate within them to be redirected away from the home and certainly not in your basement.

? Position The Downspouts Correctly

Since we’re talking about gutters, the next logical step is obviously the downspouts.

To prevent flooded basements, you need to ensure the water does not drip close to the foundation of your home. For this, use extended downspouts that drain the water at least 3 feet away from your home’s foundation.

Use troughs or durable extensions to serve the purpose.

? Ensure Adequate Ground Grading

This step is crucial.

Often basements flood due to the wrong leveling of the ground. Remember, the ground is supposed to be sloped away from your home to avoid water draining into the foundation.

Check the grading of your home. If inadequate, begin the re-grading process immediately, especially before the arrival of the monsoon.

? Seal The Basement

Sometimes water comes into the basement from a place least expected – the walls. Yes, let that sink in (or don’t; after all, sinking is what we’re trying to prevent here).

The seepage can be due to cracks in the foundation. Seal them with caulk or weatherstrip. Or, in case of wide, deep cracks, hire an expert for the task.

? Install A Sump Pump

Water is uncontrollable. Despite implementing all the above changes, sometimes it simply finds a way into your basement.

For such situations, you need a Plan B: A Sump Pump.

Consider the pump as a backup water suction pump. In case water begins accumulating in your basement, simply use the device to pump the excess water outside.

Takeaway

A flooded basement can send even the most confident homeowners in a state of helplessness.

But if you follow the above-mentioned tips, then you’ve got nothing to worry about.

Or, if the task seems too complex for a DIY, let SERVPRO, the #1 choice in the cleanup and restoration industry, help you out.

What To Do If Your Water Heater Is Leaking?

2/8/2022 (Permalink)

Brick wall fading with a blue pipe and water spot with orange top Brick wall fading with a blue pipe and water spot with orange top with SERVPRO logo over the photo

If your water heater decides to spring a leak, then the safest thing you can do is immediately get in touch with the professionals specializing in water damage repair and restoration.

However, before the help arrives, you can’t just let the water flood the property, right? After all, that can severely damage your property and adversely impact the wellbeing of people in it.

Here are three steps you can take right away if your water heater is leaking:

1. Cut Off The Power Supply Right Away

Switching off the power supply should be your first response.

As long as the power stays on, it poses a serious safety risk. The hot water spraying out of the heater can potentially burn or scald your skin. If you have an electric water heater, then you also run the risk of electrocution.

So, be very careful not to injure yourself as you try to cut off the power supply. If you cannot reach the switch, seal off the area as best as you can to avoid the leaking water spilling over into other areas and wait for the repair team.

For gas water heaters, simply turn down the dial to the closed position.

2. Carefully Search For The Leakage Point

If you managed to cut the power off, your next step is to search for the leakage point.

You might need a flashlight to locate the damaged point if the leak is minor. Inspect the pipes and the valves to see if you can find water dripping from a busted pipe or a loose connection.

In some cases, the cause might be a malfunctioning valve. If water keeps dripping after you close the valve, then ask the repair team to install a new one.

3. Shut Off The Water Supply

Finally, turn off the water supply to contain the spill before the leak turns into a puddle and water starts flowing everywhere.

The water supply button or dial is usually located somewhere above the heater. Once you locate the dial, shut off the water supply so that water stops gushing everywhere. It might be tricky to do it if the damage is too extensive and you cannot reach the dial. In that case, switch off the main water supply for the entire house.

At this point, we recommend that you reach out to experts to handle the repair process.

Parting Thoughts

Bad times don’t come calling, do they? That’s why it’s in your best interest to always remain prepared.

Wondering how you can do just that? By having SERVPRO’s number on speed dial.

From the water, fire, and mold damage to restoration, cleaning, and construction services, we specialize in them all.

Is your kitchen sink leaking?

Have you taken your Christmas decorations down and now you’re looking to do some home upgrades and repairs. We’re sure that leaky sink is first on the list! You might want to read more to see if you’re dealing with one of these issues.

Is it a faucet leak?

Well did you know that a faucet leak is triggered by stopped working washers or damaged gaskets? If you have money and a vehicle all you need to do is purchase new ones and change them out. If this is a bad leak you might have to change the entire faucet, which is not such a difficult procedure anyway.

Are you dealing with a clogged P-Trap?

The P trap main job is to keep funk orders from coming up through your drains. But sometimes food and debris get stuck in the p-trap which can cause issues. If you have steel parts you also might want to check for corrosion.

It could be a worn-out valve seat!

The valve seat works as a compression with the tap and valve seat. After time it can get old and built-up water can cause it to rust causing leak issues.

Here at SERVPRO we always want to help you put your best foot forward to avoid any fire, water, or mold damage. In the event that you do experience water damage we’re here to help!

Dish Washer Flooding Issues

Image of cabinet with mold White wall kitchen flooded with brown water several things floating including a chair with things on the table encounter still in order.

Did you know that your dishwasher will usually drain into the kitchen sink drain or garbage disposal? If these are clogged, the water will not go down the pipes and may back-flow into your dishwasher, causing flooding. When this happens water gets under your dishwasher and into your flooring and cabinets making it hard for you to clean properly. Meaning, yes you may clean the water around it but water may be absorbed into your cabinets and flooring if not dried well this could cause mold issues later on.

Here are the steps recommended to clean and dry cabinets after they’ve been exposed to excessive water.

  1. Remove all items from the cabinet.
  2. Remove excess water pooling inside cabinets. Soak up water with towels and wipe dry the cabinet interior.
  3. Take off cabinet doors. ...
  4. Utilize drying equipment. ...
  5. Reduce humidity. ...
  6. Dry the hidden spaces. ...
  7. Prevent mold contamination.

In the event, you don’t have the proper drying tools give us a call! Using specialized equipment and products, our technicians extract standing water and dry your property quickly and efficiently. Then there are others who were leaving work or school when the snow arrived and it’s a problem for them. Well, what if you’re the person who’s at home enjoying the snow can it be a problem for you?

Yes! The snow that accumulates on your home or business if heavy enough can put a strain on your roof. It also allows moisture to enter your home which can result in leaks and mold issues.

How to prepare for snow?

  1. Keep pipes from freezing by turning on every water faucet to a slow drip.
  2. Check that you have sufficient heating fuel for your home and fuel for your generator if you have one.
  3. If you will be using a fireplace or wood-burning stove, you should have a good supply of dry, seasoned wood.

   4. Have Food & Water:

Bottled water (at least one gallon per person per day, for at least three days)

Canned goods, especially cozy, warming foods like soups and stews.

With Hurricanes back to back this year hitting some of the same areas we are now experiencing flooding. Many may be new to this situation so your friends at SERVPRO decided to throw out a few tips from READY.GOV that may be helpful for you in your situation.

  • Make a plan for your household, including your pets, so that you and your family know what to do, where to go, and what you will need to protect yourselves from flooding and COVID-19.
  • Build a “Go Kit” of the supplies you will need if you have to quickly evacuate your home.
  • Know types of flood risk in your area. Visit FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center for information.
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts. Sign up for email updates and follow the latest guidelines about coronavirus from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and your local authorities to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
  • If flash flooding is a risk in your location monitor potential signs, such as heavy rain.
  • Learn and practice evacuation routes, shelter plans, and flash flood response.
    • If you live in a storm surge flooding zone or a mandatory hurricane evacuation zone, make plans to stay with family and friends. Evacuate to shelters only if you are unable to stay with family and friends. Check with local authorities to determine which public shelters are open. Review your previous evacuation plan and consider alternative options to maintain social and physical distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
    • Don’t forget to include your pet in your emergency plan. Remember that some evacuation shelters do not accept pets.

We use advanced inspection and extraction equipment and practices to find and remove water in a quick and efficient manner. Our technicians will monitor and document the drying process from start to finish ensuring your experience with us goes seamlessly. Weather can be unpredictable so being prepared is paramount to ensuring your property or business can return to normal after a disaster. TOLIET OVERFLOWING ISSUES?

Many of us have a fear of using a toilet at a friends and it overflows. Think about it it’s natural to use it but it’s one of the nastiest parts about being a human. So what if it overflows? Do you just clean it up? How do you clean up something that dirty? Can’t poop if not cleaned properly cause other issues? These are all real questions and the answer is call a professional!

Toilet water is considered “Black Water" and is very unsanitary. It contains harmful bacteria, possibly urine, feces, and other harmful bacterias. This water is usually found during a flood, sewage overflow, or toilet overflow. When it happens to get on your carpet or in the padding it will have to be disposed of and replaced.

SERVPRO has over 1,700 U.S. and Canadian Franchise locations, strategically positioned to be faster to any size disaster. If your home or business is affected by water damage, we can provide an immediate emergency response that helps to prevent secondary damage and mold.

Are you ready for a wet Spring?

gutters filled with ice and leaves gutters filled with ice and leaves hanging by the nail from the roof of a home.

One of our number 1 tips is to service your gutters!

Why is cleaning your gutters important?

Clogged gutters can flood your foundation, which can spoil your foundation. If your gutters are blocked or clogged with leaves and things it can also cause interior damage to your ceiling, walls, and floors as well.

Reason 2

Did you know clogged gutters can trap ice, which can add too much weight to your roof? If it gets too heavy it could cause your roof or gutters to collapse unexpectedly.

Wondering if you can use your pressure washer or not to clean your gutters?

A pressure washer won't hurt the gutters if your gutters are secured with screws or new spikes. Try to avoid hitting the gutters too high at an angle or you'll blow the shingles off.

If you do find water inside your home don't worry. Our highly trained restoration technicians are prepared to respond immediately to flood or water damage at your North Whitfield & Catoosa County property. We are certified IICRC https://www.IICRC.org/ and we have the experience, expertise, and training to restore your home or business quickly and properly.

Flooding

7/5/2019 (Permalink)

Flood

Unfortunately, floods can happen at any time of year. Obviously, heavy rainfall is most often the cause of flooding, but why is that?

According to the Meriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of the word “flood” is “a rising and overflowing of a body of water especially onto normally dry land.” Floods occur when the ground is no longer capable of absorbing rainwater. It begins in puddles and can continuously rise higher until the water floods homes, buildings and other structures.

If you live in an area that is highly susceptible to floods, it is important that you take precautions to avoid potential water damage. Apply plastic tarps and sandbags to doors, low windows and the side of the house that is threatened by floods.

Flooding often leads to water damage which, if not immediately acted upon, can also lead to mold damage. SERVPRO of North Whitfield & Catoosa Counties are faster to any size flood disaster and can make it “Like it never even happened.” If you experience a flood, don’t hesitate! Bucked Flooring

Are Your Floors Bucking?

According to Wagner Meter,

"Some moisture-related problems are visible to the discerning eye. Primarily, wood flooring problems can occur when the wood expands and contracts. This “wood movement” occurs naturally according to seasonal shifts or when ambient RH levels change in the home. These changes can also present a less-than-desirable change in the appearance of your wood flooring."

If you begin to see signs of your floors shifting, there could be underlying moisture. Failure to act on this moisture could result in structural damage.

Water can cause damage beyond structure issues.

SERVPRO's Water Removal Team Rescues Homes

Water can take three forms when it becomes misplaced in a Ringgold or Varnell home. In attics and basements, as well as on roofs and gutters in the winter, ice can form in the coldest parts of the home. Inside, liquid water can show up in small drops from a minor leak or a flood. Either of these can bring about conditions where humidity in the air dramatically increases.

When a situation arises in a your home involving misplaced water, SERVPRO's water removal specialists expertly perform the needed services to restore the home to its preloss condition quickly. We also perform the work needed to ensure that similar incidents become much less likely to occur again in the future.

Our Green Fleet arrives Faster to Any Sized Disaster, complete with the water removal equipment and ready to begin extracting the water causing harm to your home and your family's possessions. Water damages anything within reach, and that reach includes anything within your home's entire space. Because humidity travels everywhere, no place remains entirely off limits.

When water comes from situations in the upper areas of your home, either from ice dams on your roof or an upstairs bathroom's leaky tub drain, water can seep downward and affect anything along the way. You can see the effect of floods and broken water pipes much more quickly, but both can cause extensive damage to your residence. We use hygrometers and other devices to locate the water in whatever form it takes, so we see exactly where to concentrate our efforts.

After pumping out the water wherever it collects in more than a few inches, we begin using other kinds of extraction equipment. We use different methods, according to IICRC standards, to re-establish normal levels of moisture and humidity inside your home. Almost everything contains some moisture, but excessive amounts can become a problem quickly. We compare readings taken inside your home of water-saturated materials to known and accepted amounts listed for those same items.

Then we use different machinery and equipment to eliminate the water and check for damaged areas that require further attention. Some materials sustain damage rather quickly, and these can cause problems when we do not replace them. However, our rapid response helps keep this to a minimal amount.

SERVPRO of North Whitfield and Catoosa Counties has a 24-hour emergency hotline, available by calling (706) 965-7378. When your home needs water removal experts to restore your home, so it is once more "Like it never even happened."

What To Do If Your Basement Floods

4/27/2018 (Permalink)

1/2 inch deep flooded basement

Flooded Basement

Fort Oglethorpe and the entire state of Georgia has suffered a severe droughts in the recent past. While heavy rainfall is a very common cause for flooding basements, there are several other causes of basement flooding. Some of these major causes are:

    • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
    • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
    • Storm sewer backup
    • Sanitary sewer backup
    • Foundation drainage failure
    • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure

Because basements are the lowest part of a home and generally built underground, the basement is prone to suffering from flooding and high moisture levels. High moisture levels are worrisome as well due to the risk of microbial growth.

If you have any questions or need help, call us at (706) 965-7378

SERVPRO of North Whitfield and Catoosa Counties will always respond to your call within 1 hour, begin the water extraction process within 4 hours, and notify the adjuster no later than 8 hours from the time of your loss. If the water damage is not handled quickly and properly it can cause severe damage to your home’s structure. Remember, the longer you wait, the worse the problem will get. SERVPRO is here to help.
