Water Damage Do's and Don'ts

After water damage occurs, the question you ask yourself is “What next?” If the water is clean, you are encouraged to take these steps to ensure you aiming for the best possible outcome:
Do
- Turn off the source of the water if possible.
- Remove excess water with mops and by blotting.
- Prop up wet cushions so they dry evenly.
- Remove rugs from wet carpeting.
- Hang leather goods and furs separately at room temperature.
- Place wood blocks or aluminum foil under furniture legs.
Don’t
- Do not leave magazines, books or other colored items on wet carpeting.
- Do not vacuum to remove water.
- Do not turn on ceiling fixtures such as fans if the ceiling is wet.
- Do not enter areas where ceilings are saturated from withheld water.
