Can a candle burn your whole house down?
With spring quickly approaching many are beginning to clean and the finishing touch to any clean home is a new candle. The fresh candle scent will drift through your home leaving you cozy and thankful for where you are. What if you get too cozy and fall asleep with it lit? Can a candle burn your whole house down?
Yes! A candle can take your day of peace to a day of drama when it’s not handled properly. According to the national fire protection association from 2015-2019 U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 7,400 home structure fires that were started by candles per year. Did you know that candle fires caused an annual average of 90 deaths, 670 injuries, and $291 million in direct property damage? Check out our tips below to stay safe!
- Keep lit candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn.
- Don't use lit candles in bedrooms, bathrooms, and sleeping areas.
- Blow them out when you leave a room or home, or when you go to bed.
- When you use candles, place them in a sturdy, safe candle holder that will not burn or tip over.
- Consider using battery-operated flameless candles.
- Use flashlights, not candles if you have a power outage.
