How Meteorologists Predict Storms
7/9/2019 (Permalink)
Most news stations include a meteorology segment to inform the public of weather predictions, including potentials storms. If a storm is predicted, it gives us time to take precautions to avoid potential damages. But how do weather forecasters predict incoming storms?
By using air observations, computer models, and satellite imagery, meteorologists can detect unusual patterns or instable conditions in the atmosphere. Using physics and other complex dynamics, computers predict the formation of a thunderstorm before it occurs. In contrast, satellites and radars track storms once they are formed.
Predicting storms is important because it allows the public to be informed and therefore better prepare for potential damages. Additionally, meteorology helps airplanes and passengers stay safe while in flight.
