Recreational backyard fires are the perfect way for people who enjoy the outdoors keep warm, cook and camp. However, fire is obviously dangerous if proper steps are not taken. Here are some tips on how to have a successful – and safe – backyard fire.
- Check your local laws. Backyard fire restrictions vary between towns, so be sure you are following the law before you light your fire.
- Keep fire pits at least 10 feet, but preferably 25 feet, away from houses, buildings and other structures. The farther away, the better!
- Notice the direction of the wind. If the smoke is blowing toward nearby vegetation or your neighbor’s property, consider moving the fire or postponing it until the wind changes or lightens.
- Make sure the wood is dry. Using green wood and other materials creates not only more smoke but also air pollutants that can be toxic for the environment.
- Consider using propane or natural gas fires rather than burning wood. Wood burning is considered a method of pollution, and propane and natural gas burn cleaner and reduce toxins.
Enjoy your backyard recreational fire…safely!
